Speaking in today’s Bella Magazine, Gravitas surgeon David Kerrigan says training is vital to get the most out of a gastric band. “Having a band put in doesn’t guarantee weight loss,” he explains. “It’s dependent on how the person with the band uses it.
“To get the most out of your gastric band, you need to be taught and trained how to use it. People often miss this point. So if they bomb off abroad, have the band put in and never see anyone again afterwards, they’re getting no training. We see our patients every four weeks.”
According to David Kerrigan, the big mistake some people with a band make is they carry on eating crisps, chocolate, full-sugar cola, biscuits and cakes.
“Things that crumble up small will still pass through a correctly adjusted band,” says David. “If that’s your eating pattern before you have the band in, unless you make a big effort to change your eating habits, you’re going to get a rubbish result.”
David’s comments were featured in Bella’s cover story about Vanessa Feltz, entitled: “I’ve cheated my gastric band”. The full article appears in the issue dated 8th March 2011, on sale today.
