Self-employed motor mechanic Charles Robinson, 34, weighed 27 stone and had a BMI of 51 before a gastric bypass performed by bariatric surgeon Mr Mayilone Arumugasamy of the Gravitas Weight Loss Centre at the Blackrock Clinic in Dublin stopped him from ‘digging himself into an early grave’.
Heavy as a child, Charles spent 200 Euros a week on junk food as an adult. “My diet was horrendous,” he says. “I loved good food and bad food. I love curries and kebabs. Although I’d dieted for years, once you fall off the wagon the weight goes straight back on.”
Following his operation, Charles is much happier and healthier. “I feel fantastic,” he says. “When it snowed recently, I left my car and walked 5km home – I could never have done that before. During that same cold snap I picked up two 25kg sacks of salt and I thought – how could I have carried that amount of weight round with me all the time?
“It’s hard to put into context how much ten stone is. But I went to a boxing match recently and one of the contestants weighed 10 stone 2 lbs. I thought - I have lost that much weight. It’s hard to fathom.”
