Speaking in the Daily Mirror today, Gravitas consultant surgeon David Kerrigan says he is horrified to learn that some unscrupulous clinics are apparently performing gastric operations on slim women.
“It’s a safe procedure, but there can be complications with all surgery,” he says. “For an obese person who is suffering with health problems because of their weight, the risk may well be considered worth taking. But for a healthy person there are other options.” Mr Kerrigan adds that surgeons prepared to operate on thin women were not being responsible. “Anyone with a normal BMI seeking surgery should set alarm bells ringing,” he says. “This may be someone with psychological issues who needs a psychologist, not a surgeon.” Mr Kerrigan was responding to a claim that women who were a size eight or 10 were seeking bariatric surgery.
